‘Noesis’ is a sculptural installation commissioned by Andy Morgan of West Bromwich Network Church and exhibited at The public art gallery in West Bromwich

during its creation there has been an engagement with local communities, in the form of workshops and making sessions.  As it is viewed and interacted with here, there is an opportunity to be a continuing part of that process.

woven together, both physically and conceptually, alongside an exploration of the idea of sacrifice, are the threads of varying and disparate communities

During the process of making, various people and groups joined the making process by simply producing lengths of red woollen thread using knitting bobbins or putting marks and words onto small squares of leather.

one person may have started a ‘red’ length, but several more may have continued on the same one until it was complete or long enough.  Were these people known to each other?  Most likely not, but the ‘threads’ of that particular combined story are now woven together.  As each thread took time to produce, each person who took part has gave of their time to contribute.

Onto the leather squares people simply inscribed the words and thoughts which came to mind when thinking about the themes.  The artist then created the round pouches from these squares.  Similar to community, these elements now gather the various ‘threads’ together.

Each completed ‘red’ thread, growing relatively slowly, has given something back to the weavers time.  Time to pause; time to think; time to contemplate; time to relax; time to understand; time to perceive.

A sacrifice of their time.  What is sacrifice?  Is it pertinent in today’s world? How is it expressed and what does it mean?

Using the context of Christian understanding at ‘Easter’, this work is an exploration of the relevance and understanding of all these ideas.

NOESIS: INSIGHT - UNDERSTANDING - TO PERCEIVE - TO KNOW IMMEDIATELY AND INSTINCTIVELY - AN ACT OF CONSCIOUSNESS; TO THINK, TO LOVE, TO HATE, TO IMAGINE - THE EXERCISE OF REASON AND THE ACTIVITY OF THE INTELLECT.
